The most common spine disorder in kids

Some students—including fifth through ninth graders in Massachusetts—are visiting the school nurse this year to be screened for the most common spine disorder in children: scoliosis. Scoliosis is an abnormal curving of the spine. School screening programs have been helping to detect early signs of scoliosis since the 1970s. People of all ages can have scoliosis, but the most common type occurs in children ages 10 to 12, and in their early teens.

Stuart Braun, MD, Chief, Pediatric Orthopaedics, and Director, Scoliosis and Spinal Deformity Program, at Tufts Children's Hospital at Tufts Medical Center, helps shed light on the condition and what a diagnosis could mean for children and their families, including orthopedic bracing and the potential social challenges.
