Lipid Clinic

Working with children and parents to create healthier lives

Children consuming high-fat, high carbohydrate diets, along with low activity levels are at risk for developing serious heart conditions. The Lipid Clinic at Tufts Medical Center in Boston teams up with parents and children to create healthier, happier lifestyles that will pay dividends for years to come. At the clinic, we help young patients and their families adopt better eating habits and a regular exercise routine. Every family is different, so this is not a one-size-fits-all program. Our goal is to find the right approach and balance that works for your child and your family and to put your child on a healthier track naturally, through better diet and exercise, and considering cholesterol medications only when necessary.

Hassle free, team approach

We take a one-stop shopping approach to ensure that parents and children get the best care in the most convenient way possible. Most children who come to our program are referred by their primary care doctors in the community after blood tests have shown elevated cholesterol levels. On the first visit, the family will meet with the doctor, dietitian and nurse to get a comprehensive overview. This eliminates the need for a separate, follow-up appointment with the dietitian if covered by insurance, as can often happen in other programs. Our staff then works with you and your child, looking closely at eating, food shopping and exercise habits and working to make changes. Blood work, looking at cholesterol levels, is evaluated to see progress with in the program.  After a second meeting, families can expect six-month check-ins to monitor progress.
