Pediatric Emergency Services

A place all their own

If your child is injured or ill and you are wondering where to go, you’ve come to the right place. At Tufts Medical Center’s Pediatric Emergency Department, we provide children (up through their 20th birthday) with a place all their own.

We understand that a visit to the emergency room is scary enough for a child without being exposed to adults who are injured, sick or experiencing a significant trauma. That’s why our Pediatric Emergency Room is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, complete with a play area waiting room and five dedicated patient rooms. It’s a soothing, healing environment just for kids.

Specialized care every step of the way

Our highly skilled pediatric emergency doctors and nurses are equipped to handle all emergencies and injuries. They have years of training and experience and have undergone specialty training to be certified to care for children in high-stress, emergency situations. Our Pediatric Emergency Room is staffed with a pediatric technician, adding further expertise to our child-friendly environment.

And the care doesn’t stop there. Our Pediatric Emergency Department was one of the first to use Child Life Specialists throughout the treatment process, not just in the waiting room. Available from 10 am to 2 am, these experts intuitively understand the fears and anxieties of children in emergency situations. They are ready to put your child at ease, whether with a book, a teddy bear or just a simple hug.

Our pediatric trauma service, offered with the support of the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute (KPTI), is widely recognized as one of the best in the Boston area and in Massachusetts. The American College of Surgeons has given our pediatric trauma team a Level 1 rating, the highest possible designation.

Our continued commitment to your family

We’ve taken great care to create a place just for kids—a 24/7 environment with a talented care team, reflective of the fact that children have specialized needs and don’t always pick convenient times to spike a fever, have an injury or worry parents. But excellent care at Tufts Medical Center goes beyond the Pediatric Emergency Room.
Once your child’s condition has been stabilized and therapy is initiated in our Emergency Department, he or she is evaluated and either admitted to the hospital or sent home for outpatient follow-up treatment. Children with traumatic injuries will be cared for by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Children with critical illness or injury may be admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and less critically ill or injured children are admitted to Tufts Medical Center.
Fortunately, most patients can be treated in the Pediatric Emergency Department and sent home with follow-up care carefully coordinated with the child’s pediatrician. When pediatric subspecialty care is required, we will help to ensure you receive the follow-up your child needs.
