Pediatric Nutritional Services Program

Expertise in a wide range of nutritional challenges

Proper nutrition is so important for a growing child. If your child is experiencing nutrition-related problems, the pediatric Nutritional Services Program at Tufts Medical Center in Boston can help.

Our team specializes in improving the nutritional status of newborns through young adults. We recognize that every patient in our care is different — and design our nutritional care plans accordingly. In addition, we work closely with parents to ensure you understand the care plan and have all the information you need to help your child stick to it.

We serve kids facing a wide range of nutritional challenges, including:

Getting to Know Your Child

The Nutritional Services Program delivers highly personalized care in a comfortable, intimate setting. At your first visit here, we take the time to do a full nutritional assessment. This involves discussing things like what your child has eaten in recent days, food preferences and aversions, and the meal environment at home. There's a lot to cover, but that's what it takes to understand your child's general feeding habits.

Following the visit, we may have your child undergo further testing or visit another specialist outside of our division (e.g. a feeding therapist or speech language pathologist). Once we have all the necessary information, we can identify which key issues to address in a nutritional care plan.

Having parental input in developing a care plan is not only helpful, but also essential. We need to know what type of strategy will be realistic and effective given your child's home life, personality, day-to-day activities, etc. We then give you pointed guidance on topics such as:

  • Which foods are best for your child
  • When and how to feed him or her
  • Managing his or her behavior during meals

Our entire team — pediatric gastroenterologists, a registered dietitian, nurses, support staff — works together to ensure you feel confident about carrying out your child's care plan. We realize managing major dietary and lifestyle changes takes much effort and patience. So we're available by phone or email if you have questions or just need someone to talk to.

Families typically visit our clinic once or twice a month for several months, and then once yearly after the issue has been resolved.
