Brain Injury + Head Trauma Surgery

Tufts Medical Center at Tufts Medical Center is a Level I Trauma Center. This means that our trauma team has been recognized by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma for our dedication, commitment and ability to provide the best possible care for all pediatric trauma patients.

Pediatric Neurosurgery is a critical part of the trauma team at Tufts Medical Center. Our neurosurgery team evaluates pediatric trauma patients for life-threatening injuries and is often involved in some of the most severe pediatric trauma situations, including:

  • Reducing swelling in the brain
  • Reducing pressure in the skull
  • Stopping bleeding around or in the brain
  • Repairing skull fractures
  • Cranioplasty (surgical repair of a defect or deformity of the skull)

The full spectrum of care

Our pediatric neurosurgery team also works closely with Pediatric Neurology, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Physiatry to provide recovery and long-term follow-up care.

Pediatric Neurology is involved in the child’s case as soon as possible, so that they can help to develop a plan and manage any chronic issues that may occur as a result of the injury. This plan may include the involvement of Pediatric Physiatrists, who

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a combined medical-surgical unit with Board Certified Pediatric Intensive Care Specialists who coordinate the care of sick children and those recovering from surgery. The PICU features a playroom, procedure room, a recovery area and an exam room. If your child needs painful procedures or long tests and is naturally anxious and worried, the PICU sedation staff, with the help of Child Life Specialists, provide helpful distractions before, during and after the procedure to calm and reassure your child.
