Pediatric Neurosurgery at Tufts Medical Center has the same goal as you: to help your child be as healthy as possible. And like you, we're committed to caring for your child throughout his or her lifetime.
We treat babies, toddlers and children, but also adolescents and adults who have "aged out" of other pediatric programs. Your child's condition doesn't have age limits — and neither do we.
The doctors and nurses of Pediatric Neurosurgery provide surgical care for all diseases of the brain and spine, including:
- Benign and malignant tumors
- Scoliosis and other spinal disorders
- Spasticity and cerebral palsy
- Pediatric stroke and other cerebrovascular disorders
- Chiari malformation
- Fluid on the brain (hydrocephalus)
- Spina bifida
Leading the way in pediatric neurosurgical care
We provide exceptional care for pediatric conditions of the spine. Our doctors were among the first to use a revolutionary spine-shortening procedure to treat the cord tethering caused by conditions like spina bifida. We're also one of the few U.S. neurosurgical programs to manage treatment for patients with scoliosis. Having your child's scoliosis treated by a neurosurgeon can mean fewer complications from related conditions, such as chiari malformations.
Pediatric Neurosurgery also offers leading-edge treatment options for children with cancer of the brain, spine or nerves. Co-Director Carl Heilman, MD is one of the nation's leading experts on using minimally invasive surgical techniques to remove hard-to-reach tumors. In addition, Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center have the area's only Gamma Knife Center, which offers the latest in safe, nonsurgical treatment for brain tumors.
My child may need surgery — what's the best choice?
Only you know what's best for your child. However, if he or she has a condition that may benefit from surgery, your Tufts Medical Center care team will talk to you about what to expect before, during and after the procedure.
All surgery is performed in the dedicated operating suite at Tufts Medical Center, where everyone from your nurse to your anesthesiologist specializes in pediatric care. The unique resources at Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center allow us to easily team up with specialists in other departments to deliver personalized, multidisciplinary care for your child.
The Pediatric Neurosurgery team can successfully manage even the most complex cases. All of our surgeons specialize in minimally invasive techniques, and we'll select the procedure that least disrupts your child’s life.
