The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) Department at Tufts Medical Center provides comprehensive diagnostic, evaluative and continuing disability-management services for children and adolescents with neurological, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders. Our approach is highly personalized and includes support and education for you and your family.
Your child’s care begins with a thorough evaluation
We begin caring for your child by conducting an in-depth evaluation, which lets us tailor a care plan that addresses his or her unique needs. The goal of this carefully designed plan is to improve your child’s function and comfort so he or she can enjoy the richest, most rewarding life.
Most evaluations are done on an outpatient basis, and we evaluate children who have extremely complex problems or dependencies on technology and equipment during limited inpatient stays.
Following the evaluation, the treatments in your child’s care plan may include:
- Splint, brace, orthotic and prosthetic prescription and fitting
- Training on using and adjusting splints, braces, orthotics and prosthetics at home
- Physical therapy and occupational therapy
- Neuropsychological testing
- Speech and hearing consultation
- Management with oral medications
Because many disabilities are medically complex, your child also may receive care from specialists at other departments at Tufts Medical Center, such as Orthopaedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery or Psychiatry. To minimize stress on you and your child, we prioritize scheduling appointments with doctors from other specialties on the same day you visit our department.
