The Department of Radiation Oncology offers comprehensive therapeutic services for pediatric patients with all types of malignant diseases. As we care for children with malignant diseases, we work side-by-side with pediatric oncologists and surgeons. We often see our pediatric patients as a team and consult each other about the use of radiotherapy in conjunction with other treatments.
In particular, our pediatric radiation oncologists at Tufts Medical Center offer special expertise in the management of brain tumors, including medulloblastoma, with a combination of post-operative radiotherapy and multi-agent chemotherapy. The department also has available an array of advanced technologies to safely provide dose escalation in selected patients.
Treatment facilities include:
- A low-energy linear accelerator (6 MeV) and a high-energy linear accelerator (25 MeV), which produce a full range of energies of the electron beam as well as a very high-energy x-ray.
- Stereotactic radiosurgery and conformal 3-D radiotherapy, including image-guided and intensity-modulated radiotherapy, are available. Also available are plaque, intracavitary and interstitial brachy therapy delivered with low-dose-rate (LDR) sources or high-dose-rate (HDR) remote afterloading equipment.
