Dr. Hedges is Director of Neuro-ophthalmology at The New England Eye Center, and has been on the staff of the Tufts Medical Center since 1981. He is Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at Tufts University where he served as acting Chairman of Ophthalmology, 1990-91 and now serves on the Alumni Council.
Dr. Hedges is on the Editorial Board of the International Neuro-ophthalmology Society journal Neuro-ophthalmology. He has reviewed articles for a number of journals including The Archives of Ophthalmology, The Journal of Neuro-ophthalmology and The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Hedges has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and review articles. He wrote Consultation in Ophthalmology, which was published in 1987.

Dr. Hedges is a sailing enthusiast, including restoring and racing his Moth on the New Jersey shore, competing in the Shields Regattas in Marion, Edgartown and Newport or day-sailing his 50 year-old wooden sloop in Buzzards Bay.
