Patient services
Volunteers at Tufts Medical Center in Boston visit inpatients daily for friendly visits and helping with non-medical support services. For example, our volunteers bring complimentary newspapers, magazines, books, puzzles, playing cards and games to patients and their families.
Volunteering
The role of the Tufts Medical Center Volunteer is to help provide a positive hospital experience for patients and their families. They serve in a number of capacities including:
- Visiting with adult patients and their families
- Assisting in the Emergency Room
- Providing wayfinding assistance through our ambassador program
- Escorting patients
- Assisting with discharges
We are looking for long term volunteers that have the time to give and the desire to give back.
Are you interested in becoming a Tufts Medical Center volunteer?
We ask that our volunteers commit to at least one shift per week and a minimum of at least 12 months of service. Most of our volunteer assignments are for the mornings and afternoons, Monday through Friday. We do have a limited number of evening and weekend opportunities.

High school and College programs
Thank you for considering volunteer opportunities at Tufts Medical Center. We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2022. Please note that weekend and evening availability is extremely limited at all times throughout the year.
High School Candidates:
2023 High School Summer Program
Thank you for your interest in the 2023 High School Summer Volunteer Program at Tufts Medical Center. Our 2023 program will be a 10-week program beginning on June 26 – August 31 and provides an opportunity for high school students to gain experience working in a hospital setting. This is a great opportunity to experience the hospital setting, meet students from Boston and surrounding areas and give back to your community,
To be eligible to apply, you must be 16 years or older. Students are asked to complete a 500 word essay on “Why you would like to volunteer at Tufts Medical Center” and upload this into your VICNET portal within 7 days of your application. Applications that do not have an ESSAY WILL NOT be considered. Please ensure that the days/times you list as “available” you can commit. The Tufts Medical Center Volunteer department will conduct group interviews the last week of March after review of your application, essay, and available positions.
Tufts Medical Center Summer program does have requirements. Please consider the time commitment involved and discuss summer plans with your family to avoid any conflicts that may interfere with this commitment. Examples: Travel, camps, summer classes, sports, drivers ed. classes, summer jobs, college tours etc. Accepted volunteers will commit to (2) 4 hour shifts per week for the duration of the summer.
All accepted volunteers must commit to the following mandatory requirements. If you are unable to make a full commitment, please do not continue with the application process.
Accepted students must agree to:
- Mandatory in person orientation on Saturday, June 17th
- Employee Health requirements including the Covid – 19 vaccine. Employee health clearance on or before Friday, June 16th.
- Commit to two (4) hour shifts per week. No more than 4 missed shifts notifying the Volunteer Services Supervisor and department manager at least 7 days prior.
- Purchase a volunteer shirt for a fee of $10.00
