Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the second most common type of body infection, and can cause pain, burning when urinating, fever, and a need to urinate often. UTIs are caused by bacteria in the urinary system, which is made up of the bladder and kidneys.
UTI Symptoms in Children
Symptoms of a UTI in a child are similar to those of adults, and may include:
- Fever
- Need to go to the bathroom more often
- Pain or a feeling of burning when urinating
- Accidental wetting
- Dark, foul-smelling urine
UTI Treatment
Your child’s pediatrician or urologist may prescribe antibiotics to address the infection. Additional treatment may include increasing fluid intake, especially water. For more complex instances of UTI, and those associated with other disorders of the urinary system, the specialists of the Department of Urology will provide treatment based upon their findings.
