Our Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Program coordinates and provides transport services for acutely and critically ill or injured children to Tufts Medical Center. The transport team is responsible for the resuscitation, stabilization and inter-hospital transfer of patients ranging from preterm infants to teenagers. Our team operates 24 hours a day and serves all pediatric and critical care areas, including the Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, Inpatient Pediatric Medical/Surgical and Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Units as well as the Pediatric Emergency Department.
The Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Team composition is determined based on acuity of the patient and can include Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Paramedics and EMTs for Pediatric transports, with the addition of the Neonatal Critical Care Fellows for Neonatal transports. The team has the ability to triage calls for transports and prioritize demands to make decisions within a rapidly changing clinical picture, and give recommendations to the referring facility while our team is being activated.
The team manages critically ill children with a wide range of conditions including prematurity, respiratory failure/insufficiency, shock, cardiac compromise, seizures and other neurologic conditions, diabetic ketoacidosis, sepsis and trauma. The team performs advanced skills, such as airway management, venous access, and renders ongoing critical care to the patient throughout the transfer process while under the supervision of a pediatric or neonatal Critical Care Attending Physician. Tufts Medical Center’s Transport Program goals are to provide both children and their families with the highest quality of care while en route and to improve outcomes for acutely and critically ill neonatal and pediatric patients who require a higher level of medical care 24 hours-7 days a week.
In 2018, more than 1000 patients were transported to Tufts Medical Center for treatment and care.
The Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Team can care for patients requiring treatments including, but not limited to:
- Mechanical Ventilation
- Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation
- High Flow Nasal Cannula
- Continuous albuterol
- Inhaled nitric oxide
- Multiple drip medications
- Continuous monitoring of multiple vital signs parameters, temperature and EtCO2
Please note that we are not licensed as a 911 provider. As such, we are unable to transport patients from physician's offices, clinics, urgent care centers or homes. If you have a seriously ill or injured child, call 911 for transport to the nearest emergency department.
