Blood and Marrow Transplant Program

Comprehensive and compassionate care

Tufts Medical Center Pediatric Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program at our downtown pediatric hospital is committed to providing life saving hematopoietic cell transplants to patients with cancer, blood and bone marrow diseases, metabolic disorders and disorders of the immune system.

Our program offers comprehensive services for patients seeking transplant care and advice with the goal of maximizing the potential benefit of BMT while striving to reduce the acute and chronic toxicities associated with transplantation.

Diseases and disorders that can be treated by BMT include certain:

  • Cancers - including high risk or relapsed leukemia, recurrent lymphoma, neuroblastoma, sarcoma, brain tumors and myelodysplastic syndrome.

  • Congenital anemias and bone marrow disorders - including aplastic anemia, Diamond Blackfan anemia, Fanconi’s anemia, Schwachman Diamond syndrome, dyskeratosis congenita, Kostmann’s syndrome, amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia, congenital dyserythropoietic anemia, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and other severe bone marrow failure syndromes.

  • Hemoglobinopathies - including thalassemia and sickle cell disease.

  • Disorders of the immune system - including Chediak-Higashi disease, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, combined immunodeficiency, hyper IgM, chronic granulomatous disease, X-linked lymphoproliferative disease and histiocytic disorders such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

  • Inborn errors of metabolism - certain disorders may benefit from BMT

An expert team providing care in a nurturing environment

A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, teachers, child life specialists, administrative and support staff will guide you and your family through the intricate process of bone marrow transplantation. The initial consultation will be comprised of a review of you or your child’s history, discussion of the potential benefits of a BMT, donor search if appropriate, description of the hospital admission and transplant itself, discharge criteria and post-transplant course.

We are a member of several national and international organizations including the Children’s Oncology Group and the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium, which allows us to provide some of the most innovative care in the field of BMT. In particular, the pediatric BMT team at Tufts Medical Center is focused on reduced toxicity transplant regimens.

Tufts Medical Center is conveniently located in the heart of Boston and easily accessible via freeway or public transport. Our recently renovated clinic and Neely Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (made possible with support by The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care and other generous donors) provides patients and their families with a nurturing and family-friendly experience. We are particularly proud of the private guest rooms available for families of children undergoing a BMT and are directly integrated into the hepa-filtered unit.
