Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Outstanding Care for Our Tiniest Patients

Having a newborn with medical complications can be stressful and frightening. The skilled doctors, nurses and support staff at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Tufts Medical Center understand. Whether an infant is born prematurely, has a congenital anomaly, or is coping with infection, respiratory distress, or another concern, we do everything in our power to ensure that your baby not only recovers, but also thrives.

The Latest in Advanced Treatments

As a Level 3 nursery, we are a top destination for newborns that may require more complex care than their own hospital can provide. Our dedicated transport team shuttles these young patients to Tufts Medical Center from community hospitals throughout Massachusetts.

You can rest assured your child is in good hands: We provide advanced treatments including brain cooling, the latest ventilation techniques, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and sophisticated surgical approaches (such as mandibular distraction osteogenesis) not currently available elsewhere.

Turning Parents into Partners

When it comes to neonatal care, state-of-the-art therapies are important, but they’re only one aspect of the equation. We treat every infant as if they were our own, but we also want you, the parent, to be a true partner in your baby’s care. That’s why we offer family-centered rounds: You’ll meet regularly with our multidisciplinary team of neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists, pediatric surgeons and other experts as we discuss your child’s treatment plan.

And our NICU offers a robust selection of resources for families, from lactation consultants to support groups, including a NICU Family Support Program.  We even have a Facebook page and biannual reunion for patients and parents. It’s all part of our goal to build a lasting relationship with you and your child.
